'We've got 82 cases on the screening list': How social workers assess and manage adult safeguarding under the Care Act 2014' |
Adult safeguarding referrals have risen steadily since the introduction of the Care Act 2014. In this presentation I report on a research project across three local authorities in England including observations and interviews with 31 social workers. The presentation will focus on how social workers interpreted safeguarding duties as set out in the Care Act 2014. It will also focus on how risk was understood by workers, and which risks were prioritised during initial screenings and safeguarding enquiries.

Safeguarding unborn babies and under 1s and ICON - Supporting parents to cope with crying |
This session will support practitioners in understanding the vulnerabilities of this age group and introduce the ICON programme which has been commissioned across BSW. This approach is designed to support parents in coping with crying in order to reduce abusive brain trauma in infants.
The session is appropriate for any practitioners working with families and parents, including adult services.

Victoria’s talk will focus upon understanding child neglect, its changing nature over time, place and culture, the challenges of shared definitions for practice, and why it is often more difficult to evidence than other forms of child maltreatment. The conceptual complexities of child neglect will be given attention, with particular focus upon how we can respond to neglect more effectively when working collaboratively with our Safeguarding Partners. Attendees will be provided with a free taster chapter from Victoria’s book ‘Working with Children who have Experienced Neglect’.
