An update to the Wiltshire’s Children and Young People’s Emotional Wellbeing Survey 2024 Report has been made. ‘A safe space for teenagers worried about sexual behaviour’

Shore has anonymous advice and support to help with worries about sexual thoughts, feelings or actions. They help to manage worrying thoughts and learn more about living safely both online and offline. Please visit their website here for resources and help.

Tackling Child Exploitation - Multi-agency Practice Principles for responding to child exploitation and extra-familial harm

The multi-agency Practice Principles for responding to child exploitation and extra-familial harm are designed to support effective partnership working across different local contexts; providing a common language and framework to better respond to child exploitation and extra-familial harm.   • SVPP - Wiltshire's multi-agency safeguarding arrangements

This is a statutory requirement under Working Together 2023 and the updated document was published in December. It sets out and explains our multi-agency safeguarding arrangements and can be downloaded from our website here.

  • Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel Annual Report 2023/24

Spotlight themes and key findings in the review can be downloaded here. A Youtube video of learnings from the report can be viewed here.

  • Pan Swindon Wiltshire Missing from Home and Care Protocol has been updated and can be found here.

 

This multi-agency guidance has recently been updated and is for all professionals working with children and young people in Wiltshire.


Upcoming campaigns and dates for the diary

Dry January 2025 - 1st December 2024 – 31st Jan 2025

Dry January is the UK’s one-month alcohol-free challenge. We have supported this initiative - to find out some of the benefits of going Dry this year, please click here.

Alcohol Change UK's tools and resources can be useful as well as the use of their free Try Dry app to track and set your own custom goals for the month and monitor your wellbeing.

Human Trafficking Prevention Month

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month. By bringing attention to this critical issue, the day aims to inspire collective action and foster a world where such exploitation is eradicated.

February is LGBT+ History Month - an annual observance of the history of the LGBT+ community, LGBT+ rights, and related civil rights movements.

UK Safer Internet Centre Logo

On 11th February it’s Safer Internet Day, which is a celebration of online safety. Each year a particular online issue or theme is shared in consultation with young people across the UK. This year Safer Internet Day will be focusing on the issue of scams online and for young people, how to protect themselves and others, as well as what support is available to them. To celebrate International Women’s Day 2025, Staff College are hosting a series of three free virtual sessions on Thursday 13th March 2025, throughout the day. The sessions will focus on Allyship, Technology, and Gender Equity.

18th March is Child Exploitation Awareness Day. Awareness raising of child sexual exploitation (CSE) experienced by boys and young men will be highlighted encouraging everyone to Think Twice, Think Abuse. For more information please click here.

Social Work Week 2025 will take place from Monday 17th - Friday 21st March 2025, and will coincide with World Social Work Day on Tuesday 18 March 2025.

Training: Alcohol awareness, Identification and Brief Advice (IBA)  

Monday 3rd March 2025 from 09:30 - 12:00

Connect are offering training on Alcohol awareness, Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) and working with change resistant clients for frontline professionals based in Wiltshire. This training is interactive and will run from 9:30-12:00 over Microsoft Teams. The training entails the following:

  • Alcohol awareness and education (units, risks, prevalence etc.)
  • Identification and Brief Advice and how to use the Audit-C Tool
  • Knowing when it’s important to refer to services and how to have those conversations
  • Approaches professionals can take when someone refuses a referral or doesn’t engage in support
  • Following the training you will receive a pack of resources to help put the training into practice

International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination is taking place on 21st March 2025. The theme for this year is International Decade for People of African Decent. This theme will help to recognise that people of African descent represent a distinct group, whose human rights must be promoted and protected.

Did you know the SVPP offers a range of free e-learning courses? Modules include Child and Adult Exploitation, Self-Neglect, Learning from Case Reviews, Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and E- Safety.  To book any SVPP training courses including e-learning, click here

New for 2025

Adult Threshold Matrix Workshop – Various dates available for booking

These workshops will provide an overview of the Adult Threshold Matrix together with an opportunity to work through case scenarios and use the Matrix in practice. Explore how to make a good referral to MASH, the process and expectations from making a referral.  Suitable for all frontline practitioners, particularly those who are new to safeguarding. 

Mental Capacity Act (MCA) Training – Various dates available for booking

These sessions are designed in a workshop style and are appropriate for those working directly with adults. They will be delivered using anonymised case studies and case-based scenarios.

The Adolescent Brain (Pilot session 18.03.2025)

The tremendous pace in growth and change of the adolescent brain potentially makes this a time of great vulnerability and can be a key opportunity for practitioners to engage with young people and positively impact their public health outcomes.  This learning will consider young people’s:

  • changes to brain architecture
  • emotional wellbeing
  • potential as parents
  • ability to interpret social cues
  • tendency to act impulsively
  • use of screentime and social media

SVPP Safeguarding Week Catch-Up modules
